interested in becoming a wildcat group fitness instructor?
An in-house group fitness instructor proficiency course is administered every spring semester to those interested in instructing group fitness classes for Rec Services. This course may also be taken for informational purposes.
This 18-hour course is designed to teach basic knowledge and skills necessary for successful group fitness instruction. It also aids in preparation for certification by an accredited organization.
Only K-State students (enrolled in a minimum of 6 hours) who can commit to at least one year of employment will be hired as Wildcat Instructors upon completion of this course.
Group fitness instructors teach from 2-6 classes per week, depending on instructor availability. Starting pay: $7/hour for noncertified instructors; $8/hour for certified instructors.
What to expect
- Advertising for sign-ups will be in December and early January. Sign-ups will begin at the start of the spring semester. The class is limited to 5 individuals per format on a first-come basis. Hiring number for each format will vary, depending on need.
- The course begins early February and will end mid-April. A course schedule, with dates and times, will be made available prior to sign-up. Class times are most often Saturdays, 10am-noon, or Sundays, 1-3pm. The class schedule may vary.
- There is a non-refundable fee for taking the course. Please refer to advertisements for course prices. Prices vary for students and non-students.
- Attendance is required in order to be considered for hire. Only those students scoring an 80% or higher on the written exam, as well as conducting a safe and accurate group fitness audition, will be considered.
- Certification by an accredited organization will be required within one semester of being hired by K-State Rec Services.
- Accepted certifications include: AFAA, AFPA, NETA, Yogafit®, Turbokick®, Zumba®, or Les Mills®.
