Employment Requirements

A variety of student employment opportunities are available with Recreational Services. Positions are filled by students who are currently enrolled at Kansas State University. Students must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours during the fall or spring semester. For summer employment, a student must (1) have been enrolled in no fewer than 6 hours in the past spring semester, or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no fewer than 6 hours, or (3) be enrolled in the summer semester for any number of credit hours, or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester.

Incoming freshmen and transfer students are eligible to apply for positions before arriving on campus. Graduate assistants are not eligible for employment.

Student hourly wages begin at $7.25 per hour or more, depending on the position. Employees are eligible for a step increase at the beginning of each semester, provided they work the minimum number of hours required and have an above satisfactory work evaluation.

Additional information about Recreational Services positions is available in the administrative office at the Recreation Complex. The office is open Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m.-6 p.m., and Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., including the noon hour. Telephone 785-532-6980.

Positions

Assistant building supervisors

Assistant building supervisors assist the Recreation Complex building supervisor in facility supervision and management. Responsibilities include checking student IDs and membership cards for admittance; scheduling racquetball court reservations; sports equipment checkout, court preparation, injury treatment, policy enforcement; handling money transactions, laundry duties, and providing information to patrons and campus visitors.

Additional responsibilities include assisting and educating participants in the safe use of weights and cardiovascular equipment, safety, security, and policy enforcement of the weight/fitness area, equipment checkout, cleaning and troubleshooting, and reporting maintenance needs of the equipment. CPR certification is preferred.

Building supervisors

Building supervisors oversee the free time use of the Chester E. Peters Recreation Complex. Their responsibilities include opening/closing procedures, building security, supervising support staff, injury treatment, emergency intervention, policy enforcement, money transactions, equipment inventory, checking student IDs and membership cards for admittance, scheduling racquetball court reservations, sports equipment checkout, and providing information to patrons and campus visitors. CPR certification is required. Assistant building supervisors are promoted to fill these positions.

Personal trainers

Wildcat personal trainers develop exercise programs specifically for clients. Personal training is a unique way to connect with clients on an individual level, educating them on the importance of physical activity and overall wellness. All Wildcat personal trainers must complete a semester long, in-house training program, take a written examination, and audition for hire. Within one semester of hire, personal trainers are required to obtain national certification. CPR and AED certification is also required. Wildcat personal trainers must be majoring in Kinesiology or a health-related field. Wildcat personal trainers conduct fitness assessments, weight room orientations, and develop and conduct personal training programs. Intramural supervisor

Intramural supervisors are employed to supervise all team and meet intramural activities. Included in their responsibilities are game organization and administration, training and supervision of officials, people management, safety, prevention and treatment of accidents, field preparation and take down, security of the area, equipment and personnel management, and facilitation of participants and the program. Experience in supervision of people activities, officiating, knowledge of game rules and intramural and Recreational Services policies are necessary and vital to successful performance. CPR certification, first aid certification, AED certification, and bloodborne pathogen training is a requirement for all intramural supervisors. Intramural sports officials are promoted to fill these positions.

Intramural sports officials

Sports officials are employed in the following competitive intramural team sports: flag football, soccer, volleyball, basketball, softball, wrestling, and inner tube water polo. Experience is preferred, but not necessary.

Those interested need to have a knowledge of the rules and procedures of the activity they wish to officiate. Clinics are provided to educate and review the rules, mechanics, and techniques necessary to officiate each activity. Conflict management skills, confidence, and quick decision-making skills are desirable qualities. Positions will be filled by those attending all training clinics. Dates and times of clinics and additional information are available in the Recreational Services office.

Group fitness instructors

Group fitness instructors teach a variety of fitness sessions for K-State students and facility cardholders. Group fitness is a unique leadership opportunity to promote physical activity and well-being to many participants. Session offerings range from traditional land and aqua fitness to mind-body such as Yoga. All instructors are required to complete a semester-long, in-house training program, take a written examination, and audition for hire. Upon hire, instructors will co-teach for one semester with an experienced instructor. Within one semester of hire, group fitness instructors are required to obtain national certification. Lifeguards

Lifeguards supervise the Natatorium during Recreational Services swim time. Responsibilities include supervising recreational swimmers, preventing accidents and injuries, emergency intervention, checking student IDs and facility use cards for admittance, checking out equipment, and selling guest passes. Minimum qualifications are Red Cross lifeguard training and CPR for the Professional Rescuer.

Office assistants

Office Assistants are responsible for clerical duties in the Recreational Services administrative office. Duties include providing backup support to the receptionist, answering questions, directing calls, handling money transactions, accepting intramural entries, assisting with intramural meet events, photocopying, running errands, and using various computer programs for word processing, desktop publishing, and data entry. Computer systems manager

Computer support personnel are responsible for managing the existing computer hardware and software for the department, as well as assisting in development of new programs and applications. Responsibilities include overseeing the peer-to-peer network within the department, problem solving for both hardware and software, making backups of all systems, installing new systems and software as needed, developing new programs, and keeping all systems running smoothly. Public relations and promotions

The public relations employee assists with public relations and promotion of all departmental programs, including promotion of the exercise and fitness program, Outdoor Rental, and sport club programs. Duties include writing articles and creating layout and design for the monthly Rec Report electronic newsletter; taking photographs of intramural and program activities; designing bulletin boards and display boards; and representing the department at such events as health fairs, K-State Open House, and college success seminars.

Outdoor Rental employees

The Outdoor Rental Center employees are responsible for the rental, repair, and maintenance of outdoor rental equipment including canoes, kayaks, tents, sleeping bags, backpacks, stoves, lanterns, and other equipment. Knowledge of the proper use and upkeep of outdoor gear is preferred. They are also responsible for the general upkeep and cleanliness of the outdoor rental facilities. CPR, first aid, and AED certification is preferred, but can be obtained prior to employment. Positions are advertised as they become available.

Facility maintenance employee

The facility maintenance employee is reponsible for the general repair and maintenance of Recreation Complex equipment. The employee is also responsible for the normal upkeep and cleanliness of the weight and cardiovascular equipment. Positions are advertised as they become available.

Sport clubs supervisor

Sport clubs supervisors are employed to supervise all sport club practices and competitions held at Memorial Stadium, Ahearn, and the Rec Complex. Included in their responsibilities are the enforcement of facility, Recreational Services, and university policies, spectator management, safety, as well as prevention and initial first aid of injuries. Experience in supervision of people activities, knowledge of university policies, and event management are preferred. CPR, first aid, AED certifications, and bloodborne pathogen training are requirements for all sport clubs supervisors.
