Who's Who

Richard Lee, kinesiology major, has been employed in the Outdoor Rental Center, since last March. He keeps busy assisting customers with canoes, kayaks, and camping gear. Following graduation in May 2009, Richard will attend physical therapy school.

Richard's quote: "Come rent a canoe!"

Catherine Metzgar is a familiar sight, having worked at the Rec Complex since January 2006. She is  both an ACE-certified personal trainer and a weight room attendant. Catherine's experience at the Rec compliments her studies in nutrition and exercise science, including dietetics. Following graduation in 2010, Catherine plans on completing her dietetic internship and taking the exam to become a registered dietician. She will then work on her master's degree and continue personal training. Long term goals are to work in the field of sports dietetics, specifically with college athletics.

Catherine's quote: "Fitness is a journey, not a destination. It must be continued for the rest of your life." Kenneth Cooper

My favorite workout

Sue Peterson, Ph.D., Assistant to the President, Director of Governmental Relations, first enlisted the assistance of a personal trainer in May 2006. She wanted to gain strength and increase her flexibility, but didn't know where to begin on her own.

Looking back, Sue says she gained much greater benefit than just strength and flexibility! Her personal trainer has been:

  • a motivator
  • a teacher who constantly keeps the workouts fresh and interesting
  • a buddy who works out with you
  • a resource that provides you with updated information on exercise, training, and nutrition
  • a confidence builder

When asked about her personal training experience, Sue says enthusiastically, "It is the best thing I ever did! I have worked out sporadically and played sports when I was younger -- however I did not have the knowledge or the techniques to make my workouts work for me!"

Sue also says, "A trainer can help you gain confidence in your ability and the techniques and will not let you down. They will push you when you feel like slacking! And most of all, they provide a great advantage for your ultimate success!"

Some of the activities Sue enjoys with her personal trainer include: running the stairs, doing lunges with a bar, learning how to run, pushups, free weights, spinning, BOSU, the ladder, and suicides!
