The Greatest Wealth Is Healh:
Warm up winter!
By: Melissa Copp, R.D., L.D., assistant director, fitness
The temperatures have fallen and before we know it, the snow will begin to fall too. If moving your workouts indoors gives you the cold weather blues, there's something you can do to keep your workouts appealing. Although the transition of moving your workouts inside can be frustrating, planning ahead and experimenting with new equipment may keep you motivated even during the coldest of days.
If the gym machines are a bore to you, there are ways you can spice routines up a bit. When doing cardio, your should worry about breaking a good sweat, but instead, pay special attention to getting your heart rate into your target heart rate zone.
As long as you accomplish that, you can do anything you want! This means you don’t have to get on the treadmill and walk at the same boring pace for 45 minutes when you could add variety and new intensity to get your workout done in less time. Try some of these ideas to make your workouts more fun:
Be observant when at the gym. See in you can find a flight of stairs to run up and down, is there a space where you could jump rope, or an area for you to do shuffles or side slides. Walk on the treadmill and then go outside and run around the building for 5 minutes. Always look for different things you can do to break up your usual routine and add excitement.
Try breaking up your workout into 5 to 10-minute segments, each with a different focus--speed, incline, and resistance. These intervals can be done by changing one or more of the three factors while exercising on the same machine, or you can change machines.
By changing your workout every few minutes or so will change muscle groups being used and intensity of the workout. Getting variety makes the workout fly by.
Instead of getting on the same machine every time you head to the gym, pick three different machines and workout on each one for 10-15 minutes.
There’s nothing wrong with exercising at home if you’re looking to avoid the snow flurries and frozen windshields this season. Although it may seem more difficult to do cardio, you may find that you have even more flexibility since you can use videos, go outside or just make up your own workout right in your living room.
Simply choose some basic cardio exercises such as jumping jacks, jogging in place, front kicks, side shuffles, jump rope, etc. and do each one for a minute or so. Music can be very motivating so put on your favorite CD and do some activities that get your heart pumping.
If you are watching TV, use it to fuel your new found healthy routines. Do jumping jacks or run around the block during commercial breaks or pick up some weights for a little strength training in between shows. Better yet, make it a family activity and take turns naming an exercise that everyone has to do during one commercial.
If you have cardio machines at home, use your favorite 30-minute show and decide to walk during the entire length of that show. Make a deal with yourself that you can't do something fun until you do your workout. Whatever it takes to get you moving.
If your energy levels feel like they’ve hit rock bottom this winter, exercise may be the last thing you feel like doing. Believe it or not, movement and exercise makes you feel better and can promote better moods. Get moving and keep this winter a warm one!
